Many homes–especially condos–don’t come with a ton of useful storage space. You want to make sure that the spaces you do have work hard for you and earn their keep with functionality. Storage and display units, media centres and desks that have been custom built to your unique requirements ensure that every inch of space gets utilized to your maximum advantage.

Built-in desk and bookcaseThis den was empty when the owners bought their Vancouver River District condo. They wanted a large desk area where they and their two small kids could spread out. And they needed both closed storage and open display space. Cabinetry was added that has simple lines and a white painted finish. The wood tops and shelving add warmth and tie in to other furniture in their home.
-
Desk and Floating ShelvesThe desktop is solid oak and has a durable finish that will stand up to the kind of punishment kids can dish out.
-
Hallway and den bookcasesA narrow wall at the end of the hallway adjacent to the den was the perfect place to add more display area and storage. Low power LED display lighting is controlled by a switch built into the cabinet.
-
Floating kitchen shelvesFloating shelves matching those in the den were added to the kitchen of the condo. This added display space turned the plumbing stack into an attractive architectural feature.
-
Home officeThis condo on Vancouver's east side contained a small storage room that the owner who works from home envisioned as an office. A floating desk and upper cabinetry transforms the room into something highly useful and tidy, but doesn't look too heavy in the limited space.
-
Home office deskThe owner of this Coal Harbour condo prefers the playfulness of curves and angles to straight lines. He designed this desk with its undulating profile and diagonal pedestals to fit perfectly into his office/bedroom. A small piece of the desktop lifts out to provide access to the balcony door.
-
Curved deskThe curved desk takes full advantage of the natural light and view to the water from the floor to ceiling windows.
-
Floating shelves and media cabinetA small alcove next to the fireplace of this West Side condo was the perfect place to slip in a set of floating bookshelves and a media cabinet.
-
Bookcase and media cabinetA drop-down door with an acoustic cloth panel hides a speaker; the cabinet doors were designed to match the kitchen cabinets in the open living area.

Walnut credenzaThe owner of this house on the Sunshine Coast home had an old-school stereo and vinyl collection that needed a home. The left surface of the cabinet is used to display art and the right side is set lower to create a dedicated spot for the turntable. The speakers are hidden behind removable panels that sit above the closed record album storage space.BookcasesI built these bookcases for a client who had a huge book collection. He took advantage of the long hallway in his condo to create a library that is over 25 feet long.Floating deskThe staircase wall in this North Van townhouse was the perfect place for a desk that provides storage for files, a printer, and office supplies.Reclaimed fir cabinetThe sloping ceilings in the bedroom of this East Van house made the area beneath them difficult to use. I used reclaimed fir to built a slim floating cabinet that doesn't take up a lot of visual space but provides a lot of storage.Reclaimed fir bedroom storage unitBehind each door on the storage unit are three drawers--the cabinet now does all the work of a traditional dresser.(Photograph by Adam PW Smith)Bamboo vanityBamboo is a great sustainable resource. It's clean lines complement this modern bathroom.Pantry cabinetThis East Van townhouse was just one pantry short of having enough storage in the kitchen. The floor to ceiling cabinet I added moves a lot of clutter into an organized space.
